Non-binary: Let Me Tell You What It Means

freep opinion

Thank you, Detroit Free Press, for publishing my opinion piece online today (and in the print edition Sunday, 6/3): I am the parent of a non-binary child. And thank you to editor Jewel Gopwani for recognizing the importance of this issue and asking me to modify the original blog post for a wider audience. Let’s keep the conversation going.

  1. Thank you Susan for your incredibly insightful article. As the mother of a non-binary child that just graduated from high school and is headed to Detroit for art school, yours is the first article I have read that so perfectly crystallizes the journey and the importance of pronouns that so many people discount. I’m cautiously optimistic that with voices like yours (and mine) we can all grow and our children will find greater acceptance (like Ontario adding non-binary to government forms). I’ve shared your article with everyone in my family. Thank you again.

  2. Great read. WKYC in Cleveland posted the DFP story on their web page. My child now living in San Francisco is non-binary and using “they” has been difficult to remember after 26 years using another pronoun. They also officially changed their name to a non-binary word, so it is a long term lifestyle decision. Not sure what changes Miriam will be progressing through in the future, but all you can do as a parent is to be there for them with love ❤.

  3. Your article was insightful and educational; as you mentioned, I don’t know any binary people (yet). I will be much better prepared to be accepting and supportive when I do do meet someone thanks to you.

  4. Susan, thank you so much for your article in the Free Press! My parents have been dealing with their eldest (me) being non-binary, going by Jack (instead of Jackie), and using they/them or he/him pronouns. My mom seems to have been having a harder time lately using my proper pronouns and name. I shared your article with them in hopes that they have a better understanding of why misgendering me hurts. Thank you again for taking the time to explain you situation in such an eloquent and lovely way, a way that I can share with people who have questions.
